Determine why Jack is rebelling against Ralph and the rules the boys have set up.

In Lord of the Flies, Jack does not follow the other boys in the island or the rules that the boys have set up, because he wants to be a leader. It is is either his way or he will not participate, which does not help the boys who are trying to survive and get off the island. For example, when the fire went out and a ship passed by, there was no smoke to signal for the ship. Jack was not upset when he found out the boys had missed a chance to be rescued off the island. Instead, Jack is more focussed on on showing off the pig he finally captured and killed, with the help of the boys that should have been watching the fire. Jack did not thing about what would happen if the boys were not there to watch over the fire, instead he just wanted to prove his point that he could kill a pig instead of following the rule of keeping the fire burning at all times. Not only is Jack not up to following the rules the boys have set up, but he also has an obsession with hunting and killing the pig. When Ralph brought up that shelter needed to be built to comfort the younger boys from the Beastie, Jack did not listen to what Ralph had to say. "Bullocks to the rules! We're strong-we hunt! If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down! We'll close in and beat and beat and beat-!" (91). Jack does not care for anyone on the island except for himself. His main priority is to is to hunt and kill, not to survive and be rescued. In a way, Jack is trying to prove that he's better than Ralph just because he can hunt. He is not happy that Ralph is a leader, so instead of sitting back and listening like everyone else, he is deciding to rebel, which is starting to conflict with the boys and how they are trying to get off the island.

Lord of the Flies vs. Lost

Lord of the Flies vs. Lost

What was the atmosphere like in Lord of the Flies when they first landed on the island?

When the boys first landed on the island, there was no urge to find out where they were, or to figure out what had happened or what went wrong. They actually had a laid back attitude. One example of how relaxed the boys were in Lord of the Flies, was when Ralph and Piggy went for a swim, and Ralph made it very clear that they would be rescued by his father who was in the navy, so there was no need to worry."I could swim when I was five. Daddy taught me. He's a commander in the Navy. When he get's leave he'll come and rescue us..." (13, Lord). The boys did not see how urgent the situation was and that they could be stranded on the island for a very long time, where if an adult was stranded on the island, there would have been a larger sense of urgency to get off the island or figure out a way to survive. The boys non sense of urgency could either land them in a lot of trouble, or work in their favor and make them not feel the need to stress over the little things, (even though being stuck on a deserted island is not a little thing).

Brooke's Introduction to Blogging
Hi I'm Brooke. I love to cheer at my high school, especially when I'm out on the field performing for people or on the court right next to the fans. I love the adrenaline that I get while performing in front of my school and how it feels when my team hits a solid routine. its one of the greatest feelings in the world. My favorite book is the thirteen reasons why. I think the book is a real eye opener into what high school can be like for some people and what could happen when someone breaks under pressure. You never know what someone is really going through, therefore, you should not judge someone just because they're a little different or more quiet than other people. I want to become a more descriptive writer and connect more with the audience.
